To call the accounting talent crisis an existential threat is far from shrill overstatement. Accountants and the accounting profession underpin the trust which sits at the foundation of global capitalism.

Without them it is more than possible that our entire global economic system could collapse.

The pressure on Australian and New Zealand firms is intense and worsening. Our Accounting Talent Index identified five critical factors affecting nearly all firms although to differing degrees:

• Firms and people are suffering from a multi- dimensional, cross-generational problem that will get worse before it gets better– if it gets better
• Significant downstream impacts including reporting and filing delays are already threatening public and social programmes
• Undergraduate and post-graduate accounting enrolments are in freefall and show no signs ofreversing.
• Technology, automation and process improvement are providing partial, stop-gap solutions butcannot replace the vital human element
• AI is being viewed by some as a panacea, but cross-jurisdictional complexities will present major challenges, and the solution may well in the long run prove to be worse than the problem itself
